Wedge seat post mod Macneil
BMX has been making some pretty slick parts as of late, here’s a nice little mod that will take less then 15 minutes.
Tools needed: file, vice, and hacksaw
When I weighed my setup it was under 300g, and that didn’t include the weight savings from cutting the frame and not having no seat collar and the best part is it looks very clean.
- Cut down seat tube on the frame so it’s just above the weld.
- Cut the pivotal seat post down to about 2-3″ (I can’t remember exactly) and then took a hacksaw and cut an angle on the bottom of the post to match the quill stem wedge. (see the second picture)
- Take a file and grind down around the pivotal post part at the top so it cleans things up and allows the seat post to drop further down into the frame.
- Take an old stem wedge and stem bolt and a washer for the bolt. Now drop the stem bolt down into the seat with the washer, put the post on the bottom and then screw on the wedge.
- Place the shim into the frame and drop in the seat post. Tighten until the seat doesn’t slip inside the seat tube.
Note: If you are lucky you can find an old Syncros hollow stem wedge and aluminium bolt setup from the mid 90’s (see wedge and bolt in the far right picture). This part dates back to when Syncros, Brodie, Off-Road Toad, RekTek, made some of the best bike parts right here in BC, Canada. It’s a shame most cyclists don’t appreciate quality craftmanship anymore.
Warning: I am not sure if I’d do this with an aluminium frame as I’m not sure how the frame would handle the internal force.
