Prison Camp Mix Tape

The name of the mix is in reference to a secret surf spot Matt and I used to hit up all the time. We’d always be drivin’ out stoked for waves, and the house was just a primer for building an all day adventure. :D

The 6am Mix Tape

Stop, drop, and roll… around 2000 there were some seminal albums/records that came out in the progressive house scene. Filled with twisted lyrics and dark beats, they pushed a new sound. Long gone was the poppy trance cheese that graced arenas and super clubs around the world. The most creative records being pushed in dance music at that time were being played in dark clubs into the wee hours of the morning. I remember being at Twilo and it wasn’t until 6am when the music pitched up, the club cooled down (from the air mist), and people were dancin’ in unison. :D

The Young Folks Mix Tape

In the mid 90’s the electronic music scene in Victoria was surreal. Wither you were visiting Tophers, the Limit, or an epic Noble House show… house music became the benchmark in music for a new generation. However, as time progressed long gradual sets became a thing of the past, and in this post rave era I found myself visiting Twilo, Stereo and other clubs throughout North America looking for that perfect sound. At these clubs DJ’s could tell a story, and there were no limits on time. From John & Sasha to Danny Tenaglia the sets were long and drawn out as they built a new sound, a new house, and a new era in dance music. This mix is for the friends that loved that sound… Now put away that lipstick, and get out there and dance!

KVM 36 Ubuntu Deb & CASB

So CASB starts up this week, and unfortunately I have to use a Windows computer to run some archaic and unintuitive accounting software. So over the past year I was playing around with a KVM’s virtual machine running windows XP on my linux OS, and things seemed pretty stable. Even while running Gutsy in its early tribe/alpha stages, it seemed to run pretty smooth. However, for those looking for something newer then the default KVM 28, I’ve posted another deb for Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 that’s a little more up to date.

Reset 24″ Trials Street Bike

So I’ve switched over to 24″ wheels, and it’s got me stoked on riding again. Old tricks have become easier and I’ve been toying with lots of new lines. Anyhow, after 6 years I’m proud to say I’m still riding a Canadian hand built bike. :) Check out www.resetthisworld.com for more information on the frame. Maybe a little video will appear before the fall.

The Rock Summers Papers Mix

Back in high school I had a good friend named John Reimer who loved rock and roll. He never listened to rap, house, or any other new age genre. As the years passed he and several of my other friends changed, opened their minds, and embraced the electronic music movement. This mix is dedicated to John rock ‘n roll Reimer and all my friends who fell in love with creative music from our generation… remember good music is good music from classical to hip hop.

Warning, this is a fun CD for the summer… nothing too hard core. ;)

Trials and Mountain Biking Magazine

I just recently finished writing an article called “The Balance of Progression” for Mountain Biking Magazine. It’s going to be an 8 page article on the modern state of Trials, featuring pictures from Ryan Leech, Jeff Lenosky, Hans, and a sequence that Gonzo Tudela shot of me in Victoria. Unfortunately the greatest trials picture ever taken won’t be in the magazine. It was a shot of John Webster riding up this massive railing at city hall. Nonetheless, be sure to check it out the magazine when it hits newsstands in April.

8mm Trials Street Video Footage

Here is some video footage that was shot in 8mm. Don’t expect any amazing riding, just some fun clips filmed on an old camera. I love the warm feel that only film can offer.

A Pacific Sports Institute to D-elite

To sum things up regarding the Pacific Sports Institute neat Camosun College, it’s a waste of money.

Athletes of this caliber should not receive government funding. The money raised will only ever reach 200 competing athletes at one time, the remaining proceeds will never be invested in unorganized sports and new facilities for our youth that will benefit society as a whole. The athletes in favour of the pacific sports institute are selfish individuals who only care about their own performance.

Here’s the original editorial that was published in the December 21, Victoria Times Colonist regarding the Pacific Sports Institute and how it alienates our youth.

Participation in sport contributes personal and social development. While physical exercise is a vital component of a healthy lifestyle, helps promote personal well-being, and increased participation contributes to stronger more cohesive communities. The problem is there is a lack of venues as sporting interests change and new sports grow.

More facilities for traditional sports ignore our youth and the increasing number of individuals involved in modern sports such as skateboarding, freeride, trials, dirt jumping, BMX etc… So how can we expect kids to be active when Victoria won’t provide facilities for alternative sports as interest in traditional sports decline?

The fact is kids can’t even get land to build dirt jumps in Victoria, and the Vic West skate park is constantly overcrowded with users, thus creating a hazardous situation. With the lack of facilities kids will go out of their way to find new and creative places to ride, only to have the police treat them as criminals. The real crime here isn’t our youth, it’s the lack of venues where people can play, innovate, and express themselves through these sports.

Instead of pumping money into a new sports institute for the elite, we should be creating venues to increase sport participation before more people (and kids) quit. Victoria needs more progressive thinking, because all the red tape surrounding these sports isn’t creating any growth.
